Wooden toys

Kay's new wooden people family!  I saw these wooden people on another blog and thought they were just too cute.  They have been playing with them like crazy.  I see a different appreciation for these toys then most "commercial" toys.  It's has been nice to see them be creative with them.  We planed on painting them, but maybe we'll just leave them.  I read some time ago that when you see people with out a face, you have to use your imagination.

Also wooden eggs. They have been great fun.
Oh happy Resurrection Day!!  We have had a down day with sick littles, but at least the weather has been beautiful.  We played most of the day in the house, took a walk and then the bigger boys fixed a nice pancake dinner.  :)

She delivered

I have had a very challenging last week.  Sick kiddos at the beginning then off to my cow Rose delivering.  She was doing moving around wonderfully.  An hour later we check on her and she is in labor delivering the calf...breech.  I had to help her deliver and thought "this is great", not knowing that breech calves usually don't make it.  Well we got her out and unfortunately she didn't.  I was so excited only to be devastated at this happening.  A beautiful baby girl!  She was so sad mooing for her baby to get up all day and into the next.
We have had a better day yesterday and today.  She is finally eating and acting like her normal frisky self.

One more to go.  I pray Iris delivers safe and sound!

Homemade Laundry Soap

Here is a wonderful recipe for homemade laundry soap.  Our family has used this recipe for a couple of years.  We used to make it and sell at our local farmers market.  We found it much easier to just sell the bar soap and give the recipe away! ;)

3 Cups grated Homesteaders Soap Country Blessings Farm
1 Cup Borax
1 Cup Washing Soda
15-20 drops Essential Oil (optional) (I have found peppermint to be best, as your clothes keep a simple clean scent.  The other oils don't leave any scent on your clothes).
Mix it all together,
Pour it into a vintage jar and enjoy!
Use 1 Heaping Tablespoon per load

Monday monday

Monday's are our catch up day from the weekend.  Usually busy and a little frustrating, just trying to do what needs to be done for that day, plus get everything back in place from the weekend.  But today wasn't to bad.  I worked a little harder on keeping things up over the weekend.  I'm so thankful I did because this a.m. I woke to a sick little one.

Getting it

It's amazing what homeschooling or as I like to say home learning makes you realize.  We are pretty relaxed when it comes to academics, figuring that if they do the basics...reading, writhing, and arithmetic they will pursue what they are really interested in learning for the other areas of life.  So far so good.  When coming to this way of learning I read something that has stuck with me.  If you can get your children to "relate" to what they are learning they will retain it.  It is the same for adults to I'm sure.  As I read this book Keeping a Family Cow I am getting it.  I know if you would have handed me this book before now, to read I would have not been able to retain one word, but since getting the cows and needing to figure this all out...I get it!  I relate to it.

Saturday catch up

Earlier in the week...

Playing horseoply after dinner by lamp light...needless to say we stayed up WAY to late. I am so enjoying the children getting older and being able to "hang" out doing fun things...They were tired the next day. ;)

Very excited about my most recent purchase...Cast Iron!!!  Already I have fixed grilled sandwiches, bacon, pancakes, and white beans and ham...just since Thursday

We had to bring the chicks inside due to loosing 2 to the cold.

A Friday ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember

Beautiful day

Had a wonderful, busy day!  Got to spend some time outside watching hubby putting up fencing and my older son getting to work with the chain saw.  Very excited for spring weather to be here, hopefully it stays.  I can't wait to get my hands to planting.  I didn't get to plant from seed last year, but this year...oh yeah!  I love dirt!
Ended the day with a lovely dinner by lamp light.  One of my favorite things...corn bread from scratch.  Would you believe the dinner pictures was taken by oil lamp light.  I can't believe how bright they showed up.

I am immensely enjoying baby days!  I don't love the teething, but just melt when I see those 2 top teeth.  He's been so sweet the last couple of days.  Feeling better and ready to give baby kisses (teeth and all).  Better be careful he might bite your lips off! ;)

I have been organizing of my most favorite things.  Just the feeling of neat and tidy is enough for me.  I was inspired by a friend to bring my book shelves back out into the main living area.  Since the access is easy the children have been busy with much activity.

Enjoying some yummy mostly healthy chocolate chip cookies!

Simplifying this Week...

One of my families goals we have been working on for a while is simplifying our home by eliminating items with electricity.  We would eventually like to be off-grid totally!
This week we took our microwave out, and replaced the nutrimill with the Wondermill Junior Deluxe.  The microwave (or cancer box) as I like to call it hasn't been to much of an adjustment so far.  We have already been using other methods anyway.  I'll let you know on the mill.  It's pretty tough to turn, so I'll have to see after milling up 4 cups of flour for our pancakes.  I can't imagine the amount for bread.  :O
I really enjoyed reading about Homesteading Wife's challenge...

Some other things we already do is heat with wood, dry clothes on the line or around the wood stove, use lanterns for lights periodically.  When we get better lanterns we will do this more.  I do try to heat things up on the wood stove, but it's hard to cook on ours, because it is encased.  So you can't just cook on it like you can a cast iron one.  I am however working on saving for a wood cook stove!
I think my next elimination will be the coffee maker.  We'll go to a percolator.
Some hard ones for me will be my hair dryer and fans!!

What would be hard for you???
